Although I can see where your comments on backward compatibility come from, please note that we are still a few months away from version 3.0.0GA.
During the RC1 and RC2 period (at least a few months) we will work exclusively on guaranteeing backward compatibility and stability.
The main thing that is different in this release is that we are building a large test-set of transformations as unit tests.
These help a lot in making sure that 3.0.0 will be a really great release. Thanks to an enormous effort from both Pentaho and the community we are already a lot further in the development process than I could have imagined and you’ll agree with me that 3.0.0M2 feels very stable for a second milestone release.
Thanks for blogging about Kettle!
Matt
Hi Matt,
First of all, thanks indeed for your comment.
You are right, but to be honest, backward compatibility was not perfect when Kettle changed from 2.4 to 2.5, just little things, but our jobs and transformations needed some changes (mainly in JavaScript, Merge steps).
Even with those little problems Kettle is a great application. I am working in one of the biggest Spanish companies; we introduce Kettle one year ago for one project and the result was excellent. We spent a lot time learning how thinks work in Kettle, just best practices to solve ETL problems. At the end, we saved money in comparison with use commercial tools or develop a program (bad solution for maintenance). However, it was not perfect; I am sure that at the end we spent more time than the other possible solutions, but now we have the know-how.
One of the main IT manager preoccupations is the backward compatibility (It means more work without “any” value). Maturity, product updates, community, clear roadmap and so on are also important points when you have to choose a solution. Even I fully understand why you move kettle to version 3.0 and do not make extra efforts in version 2.5, in my humble opinion production versions should have more importance than developer versions. I hope thinks change with version 3.0, It seems to be really good.
Finally, good news, (first test) our jobs and transformations runs in version M2 without any change
Thanks for your contribution, commitment and support to the world community,
Luis Carlos

You are fortunately mistaken. 2.5.1 is out and there will indeed be a version 2.5.2 and things will not stop there.
We will be mainly fixing bugs and doing small improvements only obviously, but nobody will be left out in the cold
Matt
You are right, and I am happy to was wrong
Thanks!
